WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College men's soccer team took care of business at home as they welcomed in a fierce Simpson College Storm soccer unit and came out with a 1-0 victory on homecoming night.
The Knights (9-6-1 overall, 5-2-1 A-R-C) and the Storm (10-5-2, 4-2-1) played a fairly even match throughout the contest, as both teams were trading shots from the get go. The Knights attempted five shots throughout the first half, while the Storm attempted four. At the half, the two team were scoreless at 0-0.
The second half would continue to be a lot of back-and-forth between the two programs, until the Knights finally struck as sophomore forward
Jack Palen (Norwalk) scored his sixth goal of the year off of a cross from senior defender
Michael Hegelheimer (Ames), giving the Knights the late 1-0 lead. As time was winding down, players were hitting the grass and getting injured, slowing down the clock for the Knights. With 24 seconds left in regulation, the Storm attempted a corner kick and were caught in a scrum with the Knights in the front of the goal, but time would run out just fast enough for the Knights to survive and move on to 9-6-1 on the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Paul Koebke Barsic (Madison, Wis.) logged in his 61
st save of the season, while earning his eighth win and six shut-out. The win gives Koebke Barsic 14 on his career. Koebke Barsic's six shut-outs this season are tied for sixth all-time in a single season.
The Knights will suit up one last time during the regular season this Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. as they welcome in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers.
