ST. LOUIS-- The Wartburg volleyball team (15-11 overall) dropped both Friday matches at the Baden Invite, hosted by Washington University-St. Louis.
DePauw swept the Knights 3-0, and the No. 12 Bears won 3-1 in the nightcap.
Against the Tigers, the first set remained close and was tied at 24 all. Two kills by DePauw pushed it into extra points at 26-24. In the next two frames, the Tigers built early leads which they never relinquished.
In the nightcap, WashU took the first set 25-20 and the Orange and Black claimed the second, 25-20. In the third set, the Bears used an eight-point run to build their lead to 22-15. In the fourth set, it was Wartburg who compiled a late rally with a six-point run to make it 24-20. WashU sealed the win with a kill on their next possession.
Senior Mallary Erbes (Urbandale) reached the 100 career service ace mark in the second match of the day. She had one against DePauw and three against the Bears.
Sophomore Dani Johnson (Aplington) had a team-high seven kills against DePauw and added 10 against WashU. Senior Lizzy Blough (Dike) had a team-best 14 against the Bears.
The Knights conclude the regular season with their two matches tomorrow.
