DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights (7-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 A-R-C) traveled to Dubuque which resulted in a 1-1 double overtime tie to the Spartans of the University of Dubuque (8-2-1, 1-1-1).
The Spartans took over offensively in the first half, as they attempted the first seven shots of the game and were able to convert on the seventh shot as Natalie Dienstbach punched in the first points of the match midway through the 31
st minute. Wartburg struggled to find their shot as the Knights were only able to attempt two shots in all of the first half and trailed 1-0 going into the break.
The Knights would come out of the break re-focused and ready to play, as evident by their early goal from freshman forward
Joy Smith (Polk City) scored her sixth goal of the year, tying her for first overall on the team with senior forward
Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) and bringing the Knights back into the game at 1-1.
The Knights and Spartans would battle back and forth throughout regulation, but no clear-cut winner would be decided and the game would be taken into two overtime periods. Throughout the overtime periods, the Knights would attempt a total of three shots in comparison to the Spartans' two. In total, the Knights attempted 13 shots in the match in comparison to the Spartans' 17. Freshman goalkeeper
Marissa Lopez (Ankeny) collected eight saves on the night, bringing her season total to 48.
Following the tie, the Knights will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m., as they take on Nebraska Wesleyan University on Senior Day for the Knights.
