Luers Leads Knights to Victory Over Beavers

Brandon Lindholm

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights women's soccer team flashed moments of offensive dominance tonight as they took down the Buena Vista Beavers 7-0, extending their program win streak to 20 straight games over the Beavers.

Wartburg (9-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 ARC) started the game dry offensively, going 0-8 in their first eight attempts. However, things started to pick up in the 27th minute of the contest as freshmen forward Kate Luers (Middletown) would score her third goal of the season and the game's first goal to give the Knights the 1-0 lead. Nearly eight minutes later, the Knights would strike again as Luers would net herself her second goal of the game coming off of a corner kick from senior Jillian Huser (Waverly). That goal would serve as the first half's final score, as the Knights went into the break with a 2-0 lead.

The Knights led the Beavers (1-10, 0-4) in nearly all statistical categories going into the half. In total, the Knights' attempted 13 shots to the Beaver's zero, attempted six corner kicks to Buena Vista's zero and recorded seven saves to Buena Vista's zero.

The Knights wouldn't take too long to get right back into a scoring play coming out of the break, as senior forward Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) would send a shot through the net at the 58:05-minute mark off of a pass coming from freshmen Sarah Campbell (Waverly). Five minute later, the Knights would strike again as sophomore midfielder Emily Fontana (Ankeny) scored off of an assist from Hailey Osburn (Ankeny), bringing the Knights lead to 5-0.

The Knights would go roughly 20 minutes before getting their sixth goal of the game, as senior forward Emma Moss (North Liberty) broke free for the score. The final score of the game would come from junior Sydney Salton (Dickens), who scored her first career goal with 1:36 left in regulation. In total, nine Knights' players would be involved offensively throughout the contest. While the offense received most of the attention Tuesday, freshmen goalkeeper Marissa Lopez (Ankeny) recorded her seventh win of the season.

Following tonight's win, Wartburg will travel back home to face Luther College on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m.
