WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights men's basketball team (2-0 overall) defeated Viterbo University (4-3) 71-54 in the final game of the Buzz Levick Classic on Saturday.
The V-Hawks scored the first points of the contest when Wartburg's senior guard
Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) committed the game's first turnover, leading to a layup in transition from Viterbo's Alex Clement. The two teams would exchange baskets up until the 16:11 mark, when junior center
Ryan Stulken (Walford) received a kick-out pass from senior guard
Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) and drilled a three-pointer give the Knights their first lead of the game at 7-4.
The Knights offense soon began to pick up speed, as three-pointers from Kickbush and Sabus would give the Knights a 13-4 lead. Viterbo's Jak Schroeckenthlar scored a quick six points after hitting four free throws and a layup in a minute to bring the V-Hawks within three at the 10:37 mark. The two teams would exchange the lead four times before sophomore guard
Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) drew a shooting foul with and connected on a free throw to give the Knights a 26-25 lead going into the half.
The Knights started the second half with a 12-5 run to give Wartburg the 40-30 lead at the 13:22 mark, but a quick 14-6 run from Viterbo would bring the V-Hawks within two with 9:24 to go. A quick layup by Stulken, combined with a corner three from Sabus put the Knights back up by seven with 7:53 left in the second half.
The Orange and Black would fend off any attempts for a comeback by Viterbo, as they would continue to score throughout the final seven minutes of the match. The Knights biggest lead of the game came off a Stulken three-pointer with 28 seconds left, giving the Knights a 17-point advantage and closing the game out 71-54.
Leading the Orange and Black in scoring was Sabus with 20 points on eight of 14 shooting (57.1%). Kickbush added another 16 points with five rebounds and two assists. Stulken earned a double-double after pitching in 13 points on five of seven shooting (71.4%) in and hauling in 11 rebounds.
Wartburg owned the shooting percentage categories, rebounds (39-31) and assists (11-6).

The Knights will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they travel to face Cornell College. The Knights defeated the Rams 90-77 in the team's season-opening matchup on Nov. 13.
