MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights (3-0 overall) defeated the Cornell College Rams (0-3) 95-59 on Tuesday night.
The Knights got off to a quick 7-0 lead after a layup from sophomore guard
Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids), three-pointer from senior guard
Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) and jumper from senior center
Josh Gehling (Dyersville). The Rams would claw their way out of the deficit and take the lead after a three-pointer by Michael Drew to put the Rams up 10-9 with 15:23 to go in the first half.
On the ensuing possession, Gehling hit a jumper to put the Knights back up by one at 11-10. The Knights would lead the Rams throughout the rest of the contest. The Knights biggest lead came with 5:12 left to go in the game, when freshman guard
Spencer Touro (Newhall) hit one of his seven three-pointers on the night to put the Orange and Black up 36 (91-55). Touro's total was just one trey shy of the single-game school record.
Touro led all Knights players in scoring with a career-high 25 points on nine of 11 shooting (81%), including seven of nine shooting on three-pointers (78%). Touro's seven made three-pointers fell one short of a Wartburg record, set by Too Reinhardt (1989-90).
Sabus added 14 points on three of seven shooting (43%), in addition to going seven of nine from the charity stripe (78%). Sabus added in a career-high seven assists and nine rebounds. Sabus has moved into 28
th all-time in scoring after bringing his career-total to 1,083 points through three games.
As a team, the Knights won the battle in all shooting statistical categories, rebounds (51-29), assists (22-15) and steals (8-6).
The Knights will return to action at Levick Arena this Friday when they take on Doane (1-6) at 5 p.m.
