Knights Fall to Loras 3-2 in A-R-C Championship

Brandon Lindholm

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The No. 2 seeded Wartburg College Knights (13-5-1 overall, 6-1-1 A-R-C) fell to the No. 1 seeded Loras College Duhawks (16-3, 7-1) 3-2 in the American Rivers Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday.

The Duhawks would strike first in the match when freshman forward Emily Perharts scored on a header off of a corner kick from junior midfielder Jenny Wick at the 38:35 mark. The Knights would quickly respond by scoring their first goal of the night when freshman defender Annie Place (Denver) scored in the midst of a cluster of players in front of Loras' goal off of a pass from senior forward Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) at the 42:32 mark to tie the match 1-1 before the half.

Coming out of the break, the Knights took the 2-1 lead at the 58:38 mark when sophomore midfielder Anna Rood (Ames) received a pass from freshman forward Joy Smith (Polk City) and scored from 18 yards out. The 2-1 lead lasted just 14 minutes before the Duhawks would tie things up midway through the 72nd minute when senior forward Elizabeth Mills scored her third goal of the season after collecting her shot off of a Jenny Wick deflected attempt.

Nearly five minutes later, the Duhawks would seal the deal after freshman forward Ryleigh O'Brien scored her ninth goal of the season off of a downfield pass from Wick to take the 3-2 lead and give Loras their 13th conference championship in program history.

Loras wins its second-straight A-R-C title and receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA DIII tournament. The Orange and Black await the results of the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 12:30 p.m. to determine if they will qualify for the NCAA tournament.
