Wartburg Travels to Take on Bethel University

ST. PAUL, MN – The Wartburg College Knights (7-4 overall) will travel to face the Bethel University Royals (5-4) on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. in the last nonconference game of the season for the Orange and Black.

Wartburg
The Knights are coming off back-to-back victories over New England College and SUNY Poly in the Cruzin Classic. Leading the team in scoring is senior guard Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) at 21.3 points per game, in addition to leading the team in minutes (322),  made free throws (75) and assists (48). Trailing Sabus in points per game is senior guard Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) with 13.3, sophomore guard Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) at 10.9 and senior center Josh Gehling (Dyersville) at 9.9 points per contest. Junior center Ryan Stulken (Walford) leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game, followed by Sabus and Gehling at 5.5 rebounds per game.
 
As a team, the Knights have outscored their opponents 910 to 807, including 451 to 380 in the first half. The Orange and Black are 1-2 on the season in games on the road, but have gone 6-2 against non-conference opponents.
 
Career Record Watch
Jaran Sabus finished with 22 points against SUNY Poly in the Cruzin Classic, moving his career total to 1,245 points and placing him at 15th in program history for career point total. Sabus trails 14th place by 32 (1,277), 13th place by 64 (1,309), and 12th by 95 (1,340). After connecting on 15-17 free throws over the Cruzin Classic, Sabus' career made free throw total stands at 393, a total that is good for third all-time in program history. Sabus trails second by 57 made free throws (450), a mark set by current assistant coach Jason Steege.  
 
Cam Kickbush has made 31 three-pointers this season, updating his career total to 196 and places him fourth in program history for made three-pointers. Kickbush trails third place by seven (203), second place by 22 (218) and first place by 27 (223).
 
Bethel
The Royals enter Sunday's game in the midst of a two-game winning streak, including their latest 73-72 victory over Carleton College. Leading Bethel in scoring is junior guard Jack Jenson with 17 points per game, who shoots 51.4% from the field. Trailing Jenson in scoring is senior center Derek Magnuson with 16.8 points per game and junior guard Granger Kingland at 16.2 points per contest. Magnuson leads the team in rebounding at 8.4 boards per game, followed by Kingland at 7.4 rebounds per game. As a team, Bethel outscores their opponents 75.1 to 74.1 points per game and is 3-1 in home matchups.
 
The Royals are coached by Doug Novak, who is coaching in his sixth season at Bethel. In his time at Bethel, Novak has coached his teams to a 98-49 record, with one trip to the NCAA tournament. Novak is assisted by Jed Moseman, Alisha Hvistendahl and Sean Baumgard.

The Knights are 15th overall in field goal percentage (50.8%), 39th in three-point percentage (39.4%), 41st in free throw percentage (76%), 59th in free throws made (171), tied for 54th in total assists (176), 68th in scoring offense (82.7 PPG), 71st in scoring margin (9.4), 77th in rebounding margin (5.2), tied for 81st in assists per game (16), tied for 89th in personal fouls per game (16.9) and are tied for 97th in three-point field goals made (93.).
 
The Orange and Black have three players ranked in the top-100 of 10 statistical categories. Sabus is sixth in free throws made (75), tied for seventh in free throw attempts (90), tied for 27th in total points (234), 47th in points per game (21.3), tied for 69th in total assists (48) and is tied for 75th in total field goals made (74). Kickbush is tied for 75th in total three-point field goals made (31) and is tied for 96th in three-point field goal attempts (75). Smith Drahos is tied for 46th in total steals (24) and is tied for 77th in steals per game (2.18).
