WAVERLY, Iowa-- Junior Josh Gehling (Dyersville) had a career-high 22 points in Wartburg's 72-69 win in overtime against Coe Wednesday. Gehling shattered his previous best of 15 points set against Central on Jan. 3.
With the win, the Knights move to 15-9 on the season and 8-7 in Iowa Conference games, while the Kohawks fell to 9-15, 5-10.
Senior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) and freshman Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) each finished with 12 points, and junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) rounded out the leading scorers with 11. Smith Drahos tied his career mark which he previously set against Dubuque on Jan. 27.
Gehling and sophomore Ryan Stulken (Walford) co-led the team with seven rebounds each.
The Orange and Black took the two-point lead at halftime, 28-26. Wartburg opened the second half on a 9-3 run over the first three minutes, but Coe responded to tie the game at 37 all, less than a minute later.
The frame featured six ties, which included 64-64 with 32 seconds left as the Kohawks made their first of two free throws. Neither team was able to run a successful play in the time remaining, which sent it into overtime.
Wartburg was able to outscore Coe 8-5 in the extra session to earn the win. Free throws down the stretch by Herman, Sabus and junior Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) helped seal the win.
This was the first overtime game for the program since Dec. 20, 2016 against North Central in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Seeds for the conference tournament have many scenarios remaining for those to be determined. The Knights conclude regular season play at Central Saturday at 4 p.m.
