WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (7-5 overall) defeated No. 17 St. Thomas (1-5) 12-3 Sunday.
The Tommies took the early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in their first at-bats. This remained the score until the sixth when they extended the margin to 3-0 on an RBI double and triple.
The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the frame as freshman Adam Sacia (Eldridge) drove in senior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) on his single to third. The next batter, sophomore Tyler Hovick (Roland) plated his older brother Zach on his fielders choice. The next batter, senior Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) drove in the tying run on his single to centerfield.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. Senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) and Tyler Hovick gave the Orange and Black the lead as they scored on Henning's single up the middle, to take the 5-3 lead. Wartburg plated four more runs in the frame to extend the margin to 12-3. Henning hit two singles and recorded three RBIs in the inning.
Hyler finished 3-3 with three runs scored. Henning was 3-5 with four RBIs. Zach Hovick was 3-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
Senior Nathan Brown (Des Moines) earned the win and fanned one.
The Knights take to the road next weekend to Sauget, Ill.
