Softball Splits With Aurora

AURORA, Ill.-- The Wartburg softball team (10-6 overall) split the doubleheader with Aurora Sunday. The Knights fell 6-4 in the opener, but won 4-3 in eight innings in the finale.

In the first game, freshman Madison Stoaks (Clive) gave the Knights the 1-0 lead in the second as she drove in freshman Camille Colen (West Sacremento, Calif.) on her single up the middle.

The Spartans took the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, as two of those runs scored on a triple to right field.

The Orange and Black tallied one in the fifth to trim the lead to one, but Aurora answered again with two runs in the bottom of the inning which made the score 5-2.

The Spartans scored another in the sixth to make it 6-2. Wartburg compiled a rally in the seventh as junior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored on classmate Kailee O'Brien's (Altoona) single through the left side. Senior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4. The Knights had runners on the corners with one out, but the next two batters were retired to end the rally.

In the final game of the road trip, the Orange and Black took the 3-0 lead in the second, as two of those runs scored on Roby-Miklus' triple to left.

The Spartans sliced the lead to one with two runs in the fifth, and tied it on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. They had a runner at second with one out, but the next two batters grounded out to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Stoakes scored from second on Countryman's single to right. Aurora was sent down in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the win for Wartburg.

Roby-Miklus and O'Brien each went 3-5, and Roby-Miklus added two RBIs.

The Knights travel to WashU's tournament next weekend.
