Knights Sweep Spartans

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (14-14 overall, 4-8 IIAC) swept Dubuque (6-26, 2-3) Sunday. The Knights won 3-0 and 4-3, which also moved their winning streak in the series to six.

In the first game, the Orange and Black took the 1-0 lead in their first at-bat as junior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored on senior Mara Forsyth's (Charles City) double to left field.

The Spartans attempted to tie the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but the runner did not tag correctly, so was ruled out.

Forsyth hit a leadoff home run over the centerfield fence in the sixth, and pinch runner senior Sarah Grabowski (Plainfield, Ill.) scored on freshman Leah Campos' (Diamond, Ill.) single to center for the final runs of the game.

Roby-Miklus was 3-4 in the game. Freshman Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned the save in the circle.

In the final game, Dubuque took the 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double to centerfield.

In the bottom of the frame, junior Madison Rentschler (Marion) drove in Roby-Miklus and junior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) scored on the throw to second to try to get Rentschler.

In the third, Forsyth hit her second home run of the day, this one for two-runs to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Spartans plated their final two runs in the sixth on a single to center.

O'Brien was 2-3 and Reicks earned her second save of teh day.

Wartburg returns to the field Wednesday when it hosts Luther at 3 p.m.
