WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (19-9 overall, 10-4 IIAC) claimed the doubleheader of the conference series against Coe (17-12, 11-5) Tuesday. The Knights won 10-7 and 2-0.
In the opener, the Orange and Black took the 7-0 lead in their first at-bats, as they capitalized on RBI singles, bases loaded walks, and fielding errors.
The Kohawks got on the board in the third on a two-run double and an RBI groundout, which made it 7-3. Each team plated one in the fourth before Coe scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to whittle the margin to one at 8-7.
Wartburg extended its lead in the eighth as senior Zach Hovick (Roland) scored from first on classmate Cody Hyler's (Des Moines) single to centerfield and Hyler later scored on sophomore Tyler Nunemaker's (Ely) single to center.
Senior Austin Bohling (Letts) earned the save.
In the nightcap, the Knights took the early lead again in the first, as freshman JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.) avoided the tag at the plate.
Freshman Darren Kilpatrick (Fairfax) had the no-hitter until the fourth on a single to left. The Orange and Black added one in the fifth in similar fashion as McNair avoided the tag once again to make it 2-0.
A Kohawk baserunner did not advance past second base until the ninth. Coe had runners at the corners with one out, but the next two batters were retired to seal the win for Wartburg.
Bohling earned his second save of the day and now stands second on the program's career leader list in saves with 11. In addition, he broke a 37-year old school record as this was his eighth save of the season. The previous mark was seven set by Paul Grotelueschen in 1981.
The Knights continue their homestand this weekend when they host Central in a conference series.
