Knights Swept by No. 12 Norse

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (14-16 overall, 4-10 IIAC) fell in the doubleheader to No. 12 Luther (30-4, 8-2) Wednesday.

The Norse won the opener 8-0 and the nightcap 13-0, both in five innings.

The first game was scoreless until the top of the fifth, as Luther tallied all of its eight runs. Junior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) tallied the lone hit for the Knights on her bunt single in the first.

In the finale, the Norse plated four in the first to take the early lead. They added one in the third, and four in each the fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the first, senior Mara Forsyth (Charles City) was intentionally walked, which put runners on the corners with two outs. The next batter hit into a force out to end the threat.

In the fifth, freshman Lauren Reicks (Cresco) reached on an error with two outs, and moved to third on senior Erica Countryman's (Plainfield, Ill.) single down the right field line. The next batter unfortunately grounded out to end the game.

Countryman finished 3-3 at the plate.

The Knights conclude their homestand Saturday when they host Buena Vista at 1 p.m.
