WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team moved to 20-9 on the season and 11-4 in Iowa Conference games in the 2-1 win over Central (15-17, 6-10) Friday to open the conference series. The Knights have now won the last 12 straight over the Dutch.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Central plated its lone run of the contest. The Orange and Black tied it in the fourth as senior Eric Willis (Waverly) scored on classmate Zach Hovick's (Roland) groundout.
Wartburg scored the go-ahead run in the fifth as sophomore Tyler Nunemaker (Ely) scored from second on freshman Parker Ridge's (Marion) single to right.
Senior Tanner Eckhart (Monticello, Minn.) pitched eight complete innings and struck out seven. He now ranks ninth on the career leader list in Ks with 176.
Classmate Austin Bohling (Letts) earned his ninth save of the season, which extends his lead as the single season record holder.
The teams return to the field tomorrow for the twinbill at 1 p.m.
