WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (21-10 overall, 12-5 IIAC) split the doubleheader in the conference series with Central (16-18, 7-11) Saturday. The Knights won 3-1, but fell 3-2 in the finale.
In the first game, the Orange and Black took the 1-0 lead in the second as they capitalized on a fielding error. Wartburg plated its final two runs in the eighth as senior Zach Hovick (Roland) scored on classmate David Fitzgerald's (Dubuque) RBI single to right. Senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Dutch scored their lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Hovick was 2-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Ben Milewski (Lake Villa, Ill.) pitched eight complete innings and struck out four to earn the win. Senior Austin Bohling (Letts) earned his 10th save of the season. He now has 12 in his career, which ranks second on the career leader list.
In the finale, Central took the early 1-0 lead in its first at-bats.
The Knights tied it in the fourth on an RBI double from senior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) as he drove in classmate Eric Willis (Waverly). Central took the 3-1 lead in the sixth.
The Orange and Black compiled a rally in the ninth as Hyler hit a leadoff double, and scored on freshman Parker Ridge's (Marion) single up the middle. This made it 3-2 with two outs. The Dutch's centerfielder made a diving grab to snag the would-be game tying hit to seal the win for the visitors.
Willis, Hovick and Ridge all went 2-4.
