WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (22-10 overall, 13-5 IIAC) defeated Luther (23-12, 13-8) 6-4 Monday.
The Knights jumped to the 3-0 lead in the second, as they took advantage of a fielding error and an RBI single from senior Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.). The Norse got on the board in their next at-bats on an RBI single to left.
The Orange and Black doubled their run total in the next frame as senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) scored from first on sophomore Tyler Nunemaker's (Ely) double to left. Nunemaker scored on the next batter, freshman Parker Ridge's (Marion) single to left. Ridge later scored on on Henning's single to make it 6-1.
Luther plated two in the sixth on a two-run double and one in the seventh to make it 6-4. No Norse baserunners advanced past second for the duration of the game.
Henning was 2-4 with two RBIs. Nunemaker was also 2-4 with two runs scored, and senior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque) was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Freshman Darren Kilpatrick (Fairfax) pitched six complete innings and struck out a career-best five. Senior Austin Bohling (Letts) earned his 11th save of the season, and 14th of his career which tied the program record set by Nate Rost in 2011.
Wartburg returns to the field tomorrow for the single nine-inning game in the conference series at Coe at 3:30 p.m.
