CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (23-10 overall, 14-5 overall) completed the season sweep over Coe (19-14, 11-6) with the 13-5 victory Tuesday.
The Kohawks took the 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI groundout and the Knights tied it in the fourth on a sac fly from freshman Parker Ridge (Marion). Coe added a run in the fourth and fifth to make it 3-1.
The Orange and Black scored three runs in the sixth to take the slim 4-3 lead. This included a sac fly from senior David Fitzgerald (Dubuque), RBI single by senior Clay Henning (Plymouth, Wis.) and a double to right field by freshman JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.).
The Kohawks evened the score in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run. Wartburg used a seven-run seventh inning to regain the lead for good. The Knights tallied their final two runs in the top of the ninth as senior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) drove in Henning and classmate Eric Willis (Waverly) on his double to left field.
Coe scored its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a fielder's choice. The Kohawks had a runner on first with one out, but the next two batters were retired in order to seal the sweep for the visitors. This was the first season sweep over Coe since 2015.
McNair was 3-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. Henning was 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mahoney was 2-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Senior Zach Hovick (Roland) was the final hitter with multiple hits as he was 2-5 with three runs scored.
Wartburg concludes its regular season on the road for a weekend conference series against Buena Vista.
