GRINNELL, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (17-17 overall) finished its season with a sweep over Grinnell (23-12) Tuesday. The Knights won 6-4 and 14-3 in five innings.
The Pioneers jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run home run. The Knights sliced the margin to one in the second as junior Hannah Onken (Jefferson) drove in seniors Mara Forsyth (Charles City) and Brenna Gray (Waterloo) on her single up the middle. The Orange and Black took the 5-3 lead in the third as Forsyth hit a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Wartburg plated one in the seventh as freshman Madison Stoaks (Clive) scored from second on junior Liz Roby-Miklus' (Ankeny) single. Grinnell added one on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. It had runners on first and second with two outs, but the next batter flew out to third base to end the rally.
Forsyth was 2-3 with three RBIs, Gray was 2-3, and Onken was also 2-3.
In the season finale, the score was knotted at one all after the second. The Knights plated four in the fourth, which included RBI doubles from freshman Sara Martin (Charles City) and sophomore Emily Smillie (Parker, Colo.). The Orange and Black scored nine in the fifth, which included four consecutive RBI singles.
The Pioneers scored one in their final at-bats, but was not enough to make up the initial margin, to seal the run rule victory for Wartburg.
Martin was 3-3, Forsyth and senior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) were 2-4, and junior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) was 2-3.
