Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Lose Second Straight at Home, Fall 2-1 in Double OT to UW-Stevens Point

Brandon Lindholm

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College women's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at home, marking their second-straight home loss this season.

The Pointers (5-0-1 overall) and the Knights (3-3) played a pretty even first half. The Knights would only attempt six shots to the Pointers five. Freshmen goalkeeper Marissa Lopez started her first game of the season for the Knights and collected two first-half saves. In total, Lopez would collect 10 on the day.

As the second period started to get going, so did the offenses for both teams. The Pointers would find the net at the 50:29-minute mark on a goal from Kaitlyn Hess after she took the ball three-quarters of the field for the chip-shot goal. After trailing for nearly 15 minutes, the Knights would get on the board after a chip-shot goal from freshmen defender Annie Place (Denver) went over the heads of a few Pointer defenders. The goal marked Place's first career goal as a Knight.

Neither the Knights or the Pointers could score the rest of regulation, putting the game into its first overtime. Over the course of the first overtime, the Knights would take two shots, even with that of the Pointers, but couldn't get the ball into the net as the first overtime came to a close with the score still tied at one apiece.

The second overtime belonged to the Pointers offensively. During the course of the overtime period, the Pointers would attempt six shots in comparison to the Knights zero. The Pointers' defense became stingier and wasn't allowing for any Knight offensive players to penetrate through to find an open shot at the goal. The Pointers would win the contest on a goal from Maddy Hardyman at the 6:18-minute mark.

The Knights won't have to sit on this loss for long as they will be in action again tomorrow, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. to take on the No. 24 ranked Carleton College Knights.
