Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wartburg Upsets No. 24 Carleton 1-0

Brandon Lindholm

WAVERLY, Iowa. – The Wartburg College Knights women's soccer team defended their home field on Sunday with a 1-0 victory against the No. 24 ranked Carleton College Knights, giving Wartburg their first win over a ranked opponent since Sept. 9, 2012.

Wartburg (4-3 overall) and Carleton (4-1-1) matched very evenly throughout the contest, as they both attempted 12 shots and were close in other statistical categories. Both teams got some quality looks throughout the game, but it was the play of the goalkeepers who locked down each of their nets. Knights freshmen goalie Marissa Lopez (Ankeny) compiled nine saves while Carleton's Anna Roethler racked up five over the course of the match.

While both teams were getting their shots up, nobody could find the net. The two teams were back-and-forth with one another, and it looked as if the two were going to need overtime to declare a winner. However, at the 80:19-minute mark, Wartburg's Alyssa Drewelow (Cedar Rapids) ended any overtime aspirations with a goal coming off of an assist from Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) on a cross pass out of a corner kick to take the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Drewelow's second score of the season and would prove to be the final blow as the Wartburg Knights escaped victorious moments later.

Wartburg will begin a two-game road trip this Wednesday, as they head north of Minneapolis, Minn., to take on Augsburg University followed by a trip back into the state of Iowa to take on American Rivers Conference rival Coe College on Saturday, Sept. 22.
