Knights Defeat Prairie Wolves 42-14

LINCOLN, NEB.-- The Wartburg football team (3-1 overall, 2-0 American Rivers) defeated Nebraska Wesleyan (1-3, 0-2) 42-14 Saturday.

The Knights scored on their second drive of the game as they capitalized on a short field. Sophomore Bennett Goettsch (Marengo) scored his first of three touchdowns of the day to give the Orange and Black the early 7-0 lead.

Wartburg doubled its lead on its first drive of the second quarter as it compiled a 94-yard drive which was capped by another Goettsch TD run, this one from one-yard out.

The Prairie Wolves went three and out on their next possession to give the Knights the ball. The Knights added to their lead once more, this time on a 74-yard TD pass from senior Matt Sacia (Eldridge) to junior Kolin Schulte (Anamosa), to take the 28-0 lead at halftime.

The Orange and Black held NWU off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, and held the conference's second-leading running back, Shaka Taylor, to just 22 rushing yards on the day. He entered the day with an average of 125.0 yards/game in conference matchups.

Goettsch and Schulte each had career days. Goettsch had a career-high 108 yards on 22 carries and Schulte had a career-best six catches for 144 yards with two TDs.

Sacia finished 21-28-0 for 330 yards and three TDs.

Senior Marcus Johnson (Huxley) and junior Jason Fisher (Nashua) co-led the defense with eight total tackles.

This victory marked career win number 170 for head coach Rick Willis. He ranks in the top 15 among all active NCAA Division III coaches for total victories.

Wartburg returns to the field next Saturday when it hosts Simpson at 1 p.m.
