WAVERLY, Iowa – Senior midfielder
Daniel Luzindya (Cedar Rapids) led the way with two goals as the Wartburg College Knights took down the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks 3-0 on Wednesday evening.
The Knights (5-4 overall) got the ball rolling early on in the contest, when Luzindya scored his first goal of the game at the 9:38-minute mark off of a long-crossing pass from senior
Ayo Adebayo (Rochester, Minn.) that was placed right in front of Luzindya. The Knights wouldn't go long without scoring, as Luzindya would score his second goal of the game only nine minutes later off of a lead pass assist from
Jack Palen (Norwalk). Warhawk goalie Toney Anderson came out of his goal box to try and stop Luzindya, but would be unable to as Luzindya wrapped around the diving goalie and nailed the shot through the net.
Freshmen forward
Kevin Duque (Storm Lake) added to the lead by scoring the third Knight's goal of the half, and final of the game, off of a chip shot pass from junior
Riley Close (Polk City). Senior goalkeeper
Paul Koebke Barsic (Madison, Wis.) posted another shutout and earned his fourth victory of the season. To date, Koebke Barsic has yet to give up a goal in over 325 minutes, in addition to collecting 21 saves.
The Warhawks (4-4-1) snapped their three-game win streak following their loss to Wartburg. As a team, the Warhawks attempted 19 shots, nine in the first half and 10 in the second. The Warhawks were victims to yellow cards, as Jack Wirth, Henry Raymonds and Jake Santellano all received a card in the second half of the contest.
The Knights, winners of four straight, will take on Central College this Saturday, Sept. 29 at 5:30 p.m. The match will begin a slate of seven straight conference games.
