Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Central College 1-0

Brandon Lindholm

WAVERLY, Iowa – On a cold, rainy night, the Wartburg College men's soccer team faced a hungry Central Dutch team on Wednesday and were dealt a 1-0 defeat in highly competitive affair.

The Knights (5-5 overall, 1-0 ARC), riding a four-game win streak into tonight's matchup, struggled to find open looks tonight, as they were only able to attempt five of their 13 shots in the first half. Senior Ben Johnson (Marion)  got the Knight's first shot off merely a minute and a half into the contest, but wouldn't have any luck scoring. The Knights would go on a 25-minute offensive drought, where they were only able to attempt one shot. When they were able to get quality looks, the Knights would take them as they had seven of the 13 attempts on goal, good for 54%.

Central's Miguel Pina scored their first and only goal at the 24:23-minute mark off of a penalty kick. Pina continued to be involved throughout the night, as he was around the ball often and made some tough defensive plays down the stretch.

Wartburg attempted two shots in the final minutes of the contest, but the intensity could've fooled you otherwise. The Knights were all over the Dutch's side of the field as they desperately were looking for a shot. Multiple corner kicks resulted in empty possessions for the Knights, who attempted six corner kicks in the second half alone. All in all, the Knights gave it their all but couldn't pull through this tough one.

The Knights will be back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 3, as they look to take on the University of Dubuque on the road. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
