WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg Knights women's soccer team snapped their four-game win streak today after suffering a 2-1 loss to the Central College Dutch.
The Knights (7-4 overall, 1-1 ARC) attempted four of the first five shots of the game in the first five minutes of action, but were unable to find the net. That would serve as the theme of the game, as the Knights would attempt 19 shots in total, with nine shots on goal, in comparison to the 13 total shots from the Dutch (8-2-1, 2-0 ARC), eight in which were on goal.
The Dutch first got on the board midway through the ninth minute, after Erin Manion drilled the left corner of the net after receiving a pass from Olivia Stoops. The Dutch would go on to hold their 1-0 lead throughout the first half as Dutch goalie Taylor Gault recorded seven of her nine saves on the day in the half. The Dutch would get back on the scoreboard at the 67:59-minute mark when Manion would score her second goal of the game in a scrum in front of the net that resulted in a wide open shot.
The Knights wouldn't go quietly into the night, however. Senior forward
Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) put the Knights on the board late in the contest on a penalty kick that hit the left corner. With 6:41 left to go, the Knights held on to what hope they had left, but only were able to attempt one more shot the rest of regulation before time ran out and the Dutch escaped Waverly with a 2-1 victory.
The Knights will return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 3, as they travel to take on the Spartans of the University of Dubuque at 5 p.m.
