MINNEAPOLIS-- The Wartburg volleyball team (3-4 overall) fell in straight sets to host-Augsburg and UW-Eau Claire in the final two matches of the Augsburg Invite Saturday.
The Auggies jumped to early leads in the first two sets, but the Knights compiled a late rally in the third to knot the score at 24 all. Augsburg sealed the match with a kill and an attack error by the Orange and Black.
Freshman Jayme Willemssen (Waverly) led the team with 11 kills, while senior Mallary Erbes (Urbandale) had 27 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore Katie Foster (Charles City) joined her in double digits with 17 digs. Classmate Dani Johnson (Parkersburg) tied her career best with two service aces.
As a team, Wartburg owned the advantage in digs (70-69) and blocks (4-1).
A similar story rang true against the Blugolds as they built early leads and the Knights were unable to overcome those. Willemssen again led the team with eight kills. Foster had a team-best two service aces.
For the second-straight week, Erbes was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Orange and Black return to the court Wednesday when they host Luther at 7:30 p.m. to open the American Rivers Conference slate.
