No. 9/14 Knights head to Indianola to face Simpson

WAVERLY, Iowa - No. 9/14 Wartburg football team heads back on the road this Saturday, Oct. 19, traveling to Indianola, Iowa, to face Simpson College.

THE SERIES
Saturday's game marks the 75th all-time meeting between Wartburg and Simpson, with the Knights holding a 45-27-2 series advantage. Last season, the Storm prevailed 37-36 in overtime at Walston-Hoover Stadium, winning the game on a two-point conversion. In the last 10 meetings, the three Simpson victories have resulted in a one-point margin.

LAST TIME OUT
Wartburg improved to 6-0 on the season with its eighth consecutive homecoming victory last Saturday, Oct. 12 at Walston-Hoover Stadium, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 61-7. 

Senior quarterback Noah Dodd of Janesville had a career day, duplicating Matt Sacia's '19 record-setting efforts during 2018 homecoming. Dodd tied a school record with five touchdown passes, throwing for a career-high 245 yards. It stood as the 10th time in program history that a Wartburg quarterback has tallied five TD passes. 

Dodd and the Knights spread out the scoring, with Nick Wall scoring twice followed by one TD reception each from Brandan ChildsMatt Mulford, and Kolin SchulteBennett Goettsch and Austin Griffin added TD rushes from the red zone along with Hunter Clasen's 61-yard run to cap off the Knights' scoring in the fourth quarter. 

HASKEN NAMED A-R-C SPECIAL TEAMS POTW
Will Hasken, a senior defensive back of Miles, Iowa, returned a blocked punt 40 yards for a touchdown while adding three tackles against Nebraska Wesleyan, earning the A-R-C Special Teams Player of the Week award. It was Hasken's third career touchdown. 

IN THE POLLS
Wartburg continues to climb the national polls, ranked in the top 25 in a pair of Division III rankings for a fifth consecutive week. The Knights jumped up two more spots in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top 25 rankings, coming in at No. 9. In D3football.com's rankings, the Knights moved up from No. 18 to No. 14.

WARTBURG

  • Wartburg ranks first in A-R-C scoring offense and defense with an average of 51.8 points per game (5th/NCAA) and 16.5 points against.
  • The Knights along with Coe are tied for the lead in NCAA Division III with four blocked punts.
  • Senior wide receiver Kolin Schulte leads the A-R-C with 11 receiving touchdowns. 
  • The Knights lead the A-R-C with 20 rushing touchdowns, paced by a collective effort from the Knights' running backs. Bennett Goettsch and Connor Bailey have accounted for 10 total; Goettsch with six and Bailey with four. Mason Carter, Hunter Clasen, Austin Griffin, Noah Dodd, and Jace Moore have each contributed two. 
  • Senior quarterback Noah Dodd has started each game, tallying 11 touchdowns and 769 yards through the air. 
  • Defensively, defensive back Eli Barrett leads the Knights and ranks fourth in the conference with 49 tackles. Sophomore linebacker Antonio Santillan shares the A-R-C lead with three interceptions.

SIMPSON

  • The Storm received votes for a second-straight week in the AFCA Poll.
  • Coming off a bye week, Simpson last earned a fourth consecutive victory with a 29-21 win at Nebraska Wesleyan Oct. 5. 
  • Simpson and Wartburg are the two remaining A-R-C squads undefeated during conference play.
  • The Storm rank third in A-R-C team defense, allowing an averaging of 20 points against per game.
  • Junior running back Joe Meyer leads the conference with 597 rushing yards, averaging 119.4 per game. 
  • Senior wide receiver Sam Bartlett is the conference receiving leader with 719, good for an average of 143.8 per game.
