Knights Q & A: Kolin Schulte

A native of Anamosa, Iowa, Kolin Schulte is a senior wide receiver on the Wartburg football team. A biochemistry major at Wartburg, Schulte is a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team member. This season, Schulte leads the American Rivers Conference with 11 receiving touchdowns and was named A-R-C Male Athlete of the Week Oct. 8.

How did you hear about Wartburg?

KS: I've known about Wartburg for much of my life. I know many people from my community who have attended Wartburg and have known it to be a quality college.

What convinced you that Wartburg would be the right fit for you?

KS: In my college search I knew I wanted a small school where I could get to know my classmates and professors well and where I could continue my athletic career. I felt that Wartburg was the right fit for me because of its commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics, as well as its relatively close proximity to home.

What are your plans after graduation?

KS: My plans after graduation are to apply to medical school and become a doctor. I have not decided which type of doctor I would like to be as I am hoping to figure that decision out during clinicals.

What is your favorite Wartburg football memory?

KS: My favorite football memory is winning the Americans Rivers Conference Championship last season against Dubuque. Ending the season on a winning streak and capping it off with a celebration on Dubuque's field is something I will never forget.

How do you balance being a student and an athlete?

KS: I balance being a student and an athlete with good time management. As all football meetings and practices are scheduled for me, I know that I must reserve remaining time available for homework and studying. I make sure that both football and school are a priority for me, and I am giving good effort in both.

How has playing football added to your Wartburg experience?

KS: Playing football has added to my Wartburg experience by providing me a means to express myself in a way that I enjoy. Playing football has been challenging, but rewarding. I have learned valuable skills from being a part of a team, while gaining lifelong friendships.

What are your pregame rituals?

KS: I try not to believe in any superstitions or follow any pre-game rituals as I think they can hold you back if you're more worried about them than the game. I do always listen to music to calm myself and get me motivated for an upcoming contest.

What advice do you have for high school students considering the possibility of continuing their football career in college?

KS: Be highly motivated to excel. College sports are not easy as there are many good athletes that put in time and work. Succeeding in a sport makes the experience of athletics much more rewarding.

What does it mean to be a Knight?

KS: Being a Knight means being successful. I truly believe that in every discipline, Wartburg College succeeds. This raises the bar for every member of the college to reach. Being a Knight means that you are dedicated to success and is something that will never go away.
