MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Wartburg volleyball team saw its five-match win streak come to an end Wednesday evening, dropping a non-conference match in five sets at Cornell College.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Knights conceded the final two sets to allow the Rams to earn a 3-2 win on their home court. Wartburg drops to 14-7 overall with the setback.
The Orange and Black came out firing, hitting .323 in the first set with 11 kills and forcing eight Cornell errors, rolling to a 25-11 win capped off with an 8-0 run to take a 1-0 match advantage.
The Knights and Rams traded sets two and three. The fourth set saw six lead changes with back-and-forth action. Down 23-18, Wartburg called a timeout and answered with four-straight points to come within one, but Cornell sealed the match 25-23 and carried the momentum into the final frame, winning 15-10.
Wartburg led the match with 12 blocks compared to five from Cornell, but the home team edged the Knights with a 58-50 kill advantage.
Jayme Willemssen led the attack with 12 kills, followed by 10 each from
Natalie Clayberg and
Kylie Bildstein.
Claire Marsh led with 24 assists and
Katie Foster hit the 30-dig mark for the fourth time this season with 31.
