No. 11/18 Knights to host Nebraska Wesleyan during Wartburg Homecoming

WAVERLY, Iowa - No. 11/18 Wartburg football team hosts Nebraska Wesleyan University this Saturday, Oct. 12 at Walston-Hoover Stadium during Homecoming.

THE SERIES
Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting between Wartburg and Nebraska Wesleyan, with the Knights holding a 3-0 series advantage. The Knights and Prairie Wolves have met in the last three seasons, with Wartburg outscoring NWU 121-62. The two teams played in Lincoln, Neb., last year, with the Orange and Black earning a 42-14 win.

LAST TIME OUT
Wartburg remained unbeaten with a 48-27 win at Buena Vista in Storm Lake last Saturday, as a strong second half pushed the Knights past the Beavers. Down 20-14 at halftime, Wartburg responded with the opening score in the third quarter and added 27 points in the final frame to seal the road victory. 

Kolin Schulte recorded over 100 receiving yards for a third-straight game, tallying career-highs with 11 catches for 190 yards. He caught three touchdown passes, two from Noah Dodd and another from Jace Moore

Noah Dodd's three TD passes stand as a career-high, as well as his 191 passing yards. Moore added 118 yards through the air. Bennett Goettsch also had a career performance, tallying 128 rushing yards, backed by an 80-yard run, one of five Wartburg scores in the fourth quarter. 

After a Nick Wall seven-yard TD reception gave Wartburg a 14-7 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Beavers answered with a 88-yard kickoff return to tie the game and followed with a score with 3:21 remaining to gain the halftime advantage. 

The Orange and Black regrouped at the break and opening the second half with one of three Schulte TD catches, a 22-yard pass from Dodd to give the visitors a 21-20 lead. 

Wartburg allowed just one more Buena Vista score while adding four more touchdowns. Connor Bailey, Dodd, and Goettsch each scored on the ground while Schulte capped off the fourth-quarter barrage with his 10th touchdown of the season.

Defensively, Jason Fisher led the Knights with eight solo tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack. Eli Barrett followed with seven tackles while notching three pass breakups and a fumble recovery. 

IN THE POLLS
Wartburg continues to climb the national polls, ranked in the top 25 in a pair of Division III rankings for a fourth consecutive week. The Knights jumped two more spots in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top 25 rankings, coming in at No. 11. In D3football.com's rankings, the Knights moved up from No. 20 to No. 18.

HOMECOMING HISTORY
The Knights have won seven consecutive homecoming matchups, with the most recent homecoming loss coming in 2011 when Wartburg suffered a 38-37 overtime loss to Simpson. During last year's homecoming, the Orange and Black took down then-ranked No. 20 Central College 47-20 as Wartburg great Matt Sacia 19' tied a program single-game school record with five touchdown passes for the second time in his career. 

SCHULTE NAMED A-R-C MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Senior wide receiver Kolin Schulte recorded over 100 receiving yards for a third-straight game, tallying career-highs with 11 catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns during the Knights' road win at Buena Vista on Saturday. For his performance, he was awarded American Rivers Conference Male Athlete of the Week and Football Offensive Player of the Week honors. He leads the conference with 39 receptions and is tied for the lead with 10 touchdowns. In addition, his 653 receiving yards ranks second in the conference and third in the nation.

Schulte is five touchdown receptions away from the school record of 15, first set by Ryan Rausch in 1999 and again by Riley Brockway in 2017. He previously tied Brockway's record of most touchdowns received in a game with four at Monmouth in the 2019 season opener. 

2019 WARTBURG HALL OF FAME CLASS
Eight individuals will be inducted into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the game:

Akeem Carter, a 2009 graduate, was a four-year member of the wrestling team. He was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time All-American. Carter was a three-time conference champion and has a career record of 99-11 with seven major decisions, five tech falls and six falls. He was inducted into the NWCA Hall of Fame in 2016. Carter is the president and founder of Tunnel Light Fitness, a non-profit organization in Iowa City. He has two children and lives in Waterloo, Iowa.

Angela (Hartwig) Elmshaeuser, a 2009 graduate, was a four-year member of the softball team. The pitcher was a three-time First-team All-Conference selection, a three-time All-Region honoree and a two-time All-American. Elmshaeuser continues to hold Wartburg's career record in strikeouts, games started, complete games and wins. She ranks in eight other career categories in the circle. Elmshaeuser received her doctorate of physical therapy from the University of Iowa. She lives in Columbus, Miss., with her husband, Joshua, and son, Henry.

Joel Reynolds, a 2005 graduate, was a four-year member of the baseball team as an infielder. He was a three-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-Region honoree. Reynolds ranks in nine career categories, including second in doubles and still holds the season record in doubles. Reynolds also helped lead the Knights to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III College World Series his senior year, where he was named to the all-tournament team. He is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Iowa Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, PC and lives in West Des Moines, Iowa, with his wife, Annie (Fox), also a 2005 Wartburg graduate, and daughter, Ellie.

Anthony Souhrada, a 2000 graduate, was a four-year member of the football team on the defensive line. He was a three-time All-Conference selection. Souhrada continues to be the career leader in quarterback hurries and ranks in four other career categories. He is the Owner and Operations Manager of Legacy Management, a real estate asset management company in Ames, Bettendorf, Iowa and Peoria, Illinois. Souhrada lives in Bettendorf, Iowa, with his wife, Jesell and two sons, Alex and Sam.

Leon Webrand was a member of the basketball and baseball teams at Wartburg from 1950-1953. The Knights won the 1951-52 conference championship in basketball during his career. Baseball, however, was his passion. His collegiate career was cut short after three years at Wartburg when he joined the service followed by several years of professional baseball. He completed his degree and graduated from Wartburg in 1962. The retired president of Litton's Aero Products Division lives in Westlake Village, Calif., with his wife, Sandy. They have one adult son, Blair.

Aaron Wernimont, a 2009 graduate, was a four-year member of the wrestling team. He was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time All-American. Wernimont had a career record of 151-12 with 21 major decisions, 13 tech falls and 14 falls. He ranks second in career wins and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Wernimont, who died following a sudden illness in 2012, received Wartburg's Young Alumni Award posthumously in 2017. He is survived by his wife, Kahri (Heinemann), a 2010 Wartburg graduate.

Heidi (Porter) Wiley, a 2007 graduate, was a four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams. She was the 2007 outdoor national champion in the 800 and a member of the 2005 national championship relay in the distance medley relay. Wiley was the 2007 USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year on the track for the indoor and outdoor season. She was a six-time All-American. Wiley is a doula and stay at home mother and lives in Madison, Wis., with her husband, Nathan, a 2011 Wartburg graduate, and two children, Oliver and Willow.

Ashley (Rogers) Winter, a 2008 graduate, was a four-year member of the volleyball and softball teams. She was the conference MVP in volleyball her senior year, was a four-time First-team All-Conference selection, a three-time All-Region honoree and an All-American. On the softball field, Winter was a three-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-Region honoree. She continues to hold four career records in volleyball and five career records in softball. Winter is the head softball coach at Loras College, in Dubuque where she lives with her husband, Bud, a 2007 Wartburg graduate.

WARTBURG

  • Through the first five weeks of the season, Wartburg ranks first in A-R-C scoring offense and fifth in NCAA Division III with an average of 50 points per game.
  • Wartburg leads the A-R-C with 17 rushing touchdowns, paced by a collective effort from the Knights' running backs. Bennett Goettsch and Connor Bailey have accounted for nine total; Goettsch with five and Bailey with four. 
  • Quarterbacks Jace Moore and Noah Dodd have each played under center in all five games. The pair has combined for 15 passing touchdowns and nearly 1,300 yards through the air. 
  • Junior defensive back Eli Barrett leads the Knights with 45 tackles, the second most in the conference. Sophomore linebacker Antonio Santillan shares the A-R-C lead with three interceptions.

NEBRASKA WESLEYAN

  • The Prairie Wolves, picked to finish seventh in the A-R-C Preseason Poll, opened the 2019 season 3-0 with wins over Westminster College, Illinois College, and Buena Vista before a 29-21 loss versus Simpson last Saturday. 
  • NWU turned in a 3-7 overall record in 2018 with conference wins over Luther and Buena Vista.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan's passing offense ranks second in the conference with an average of 333 yards per game. 
  • Senior quarterback Jonathan Curti leads the conference with 1,332 passing yards.
