Knights Close Out Regular Season At Dubuque

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights (16-8 overall, 10-5 A-R-C) will look to end the regular season on a high note when they travel to face the University of Dubuque Spartans (13-11, 6-9) on Saturday at 4 p.m. Following the conclusion of Saturday's game, the two teams will face each other in the first round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. The Knights are the third seed heading into the tournament, while the Spartans own the sixth seed.

The Series
Wartburg owns the all-time series lead at 87-46, including winning five of the last six games against the Spartans. The two teams previously met this season, with Wartburg winning 82-65 on Jan. 19, powered by 27 points by senior guard Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck), who also broke the record for most made three-pointers in a career in program history that evening.

The Orange and Black are coming off of a record-breaking night in a 103-81 victory over Buena Vista on Wednesday. The Knights made a program-high 18 three-pointers in the game, followed by Kickbush breaking the single-game record for most made three-pointers in program history (9). Senior guard Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) leads the team and conference in scoring with 21.5 points/game, followed by Kickbush's 17.1 points/game. Sabus leads the team in rebounding at 5.8 rebounds/game, while senior center Josh Gehling (Dyersville) is second on the squad with 5.1 rebounds/game.
 
Career Record Watch
Sabus' career 1,548 points are third in program history, trailing second by 48 points (1,596) and first by 384 points (1,932). His 257 career assists are sixth in program history, trailing fourth by 10 (267) and third place by 31 (288). Sabus' 465 career made free throws are second all-time in program history, trailing first by 59 (524). Kickbush's 1,122 career points are 25th in program history, trailing 24th by 11 points (1,133), 23rd by 29 (1,151) and 22nd by 30 points (1,152).
 
Single Season Record Watch
Sabus has scored 515 points this season, which is ninth in a single-season in program history. He needs 19 points (534) to move up to the two-way tie of seventh place, or he needs 27 points to tie sixth (542). His 21.5 points/game stand at sixth all-time in a single-season in program history, trailing fifth by .5 points (22.0 points/game), fourth by .6 points (22.1 points/game) and third by .8 points (22.3 points/game). Sabus' 143 made free throws this season are sixth in an individual season, trailing fifth by one (144), fourth by two (145) and third by seven (150). Sophomore guard Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) has recorded 49 steals this season, placing him fourth all-time for an individual season. He needs one steal to tie third (50), five steals to tie second (54) and 13 to tie first (62).
 
Dubuque
The Spartans are coming off of an 83-61 loss to Buena Vista on Saturday, Feb. 9. Leading the team in scoring is Marcus McDaniel at 16.7 points/game, followed by Avery Butler and Michael Williams at 11.2 points/game each and Peter Ragen at 10.3 points/game. Michael Williams leads the team in rebounds at 7.3 rebounds/game, while Butler is second with 6.6 rebounds/game. Butler leads the team in field goal percentage (.591), while Mitch Burger leads in three-point percentage (.439).
 
The Spartans are coached by Robbie Siverding, who has coached Dubuque since the 2007-08 season. Over his time with the program, he has led Dubuque to two conference titles (2013, 2015) and one regular season title (2015-16). He is assisted by Joran Townsend and David Pederson.
 
Against the Conference
The Knights own the fourth-highest scoring offense in the American Rivers Conference at 84 points/game, followed by the third-best scoring defense at 76 points/game. The scoring margin (8.0) is second-best in the conference. Wartburg's Knights 37.3 rebounds/game are fourth in the conference, while they limit their opponents to the fewest rebounds per game in the conference (32.7). Sabus' .539 field goal percentage is fourth in the conference. Kickbush's .452 three-point field goal percentage is third-best, while his 3.8 made three-pointers/game is the top mark in the A-R-C. Smith Drahos' 2.0 steals/game are the second-best mark in the conference.
