ST. LOUIS-- The Wartburg softball team (11-5 overall) split its Sunday's games at the Washington University in St. Louis' Tournament. The Knights fell 9-2 to DePauw, but defeated host-WashU 8-2. This marked the first win over the Bears in the series since 2008.
Against the Tigers, the Orange and Black tallied their runs in the second inning on a fielding error and in the third on a sac fly from freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes).
The game against the Bears was scoreless until the third when junior Emily Smillie (Parker, Colo.) scored on a passed ball and freshman Grace Petersen (Joliet, Ill.) drove in classmate Haley Barkau (Denver) on her single up the middle to give Wartburg the 2-0 lead.
WashU would knot it at two all in its fourth, until the Knights answered with a four-run fifth inning to reclaim the 6-2 lead. Freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point) had a two-run single to right field and the next batter, classmate Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.) hit a two-run double down the left field line.
The final two runs for the Orange and Black scored in the sixth on another fielding error and groundout.
Petersen and Levine both went 2-3 in the game. Senior Hannah Onken (Jefferson) was 2-2 and sophomore Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned her third save of the season.
Senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) increased her hitting streak to 15 games.
Wartburg returns to the field Saturday for its home opener against Aurora at noon.
