WAVERLY, Iowa- The Wartburg softball team (13-5 overall) swept No. 20 UW-Oshkosh in run rule fashion Sunday. The Knights won the opener 13-5 and the finale 11-3, as each game was only five innings.
In the first game, the Orange and Black tallied five runs in both the third and fourth innings. Some highlights included three consecutive RBI singles in the third and an RBI double from senior Hannah Onken (Greene) in the fourth.
Senior Morgan Goedken (Iowa City) drove in the game-winning run on her sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Classmate Brenna Gray (Waterloo) was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with a run scored an an RBI. Onken and senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) were 2-3.
Sophomore Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned her ninth career save to become the program's all-time leader. She surpassed the eight set by Stephanie Rasmussen (2000-03) and Angela Hartwig (2006-09).
In the second game, the Titans took the early 2-0 lead in the first. Wartburg answered with four runs as senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) started the scoring frenzy as she stole home. O'Brien crossed the plate on a wild pitch and freshman Grace Petersen (Joliet, Ill.) hit a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 4-2.
UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to one on its next at-bat on an RBI single to left. Freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) helped the Knights extend the lead with her two-run home run over the center field fence.
In the fourth, sophomore Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) had a two-run shot of her own to left, and senior pinch hitter Madison Rentschler (Marion) hit a two-run double to right. Sophomore Megan Ritter (Newton) re-entered as the base runner and scored on Illg's fielder's choice..
Roby-Miklus and O'Brien each went 3-4.
The Orange and Black return to the field Wednesday when they host Aurora at 3 p.m.
