WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (17-7 overall, 2-2 A-R-C) was swept by No. 11 Coe (24-3, 4-0) Tuesday afternoon. The Kohawks claimed the opener 5-3, and the finale, 13-9.
Coe was the first team on the scoreboard in the first game on a sac fly. The Knights answered with a two-run triple by freshman Grace Petersen (Joliet, Ill.) in their ensuing at-bats. The Kohawks evened the score on an RBI double in the fourth before the Orange and Black plated one in the fifth as senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) drove in classmate Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) on her single to left to make the score 3-2.
Coe scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to retake the lead at 5-3. A rally attempt was quieted as Wartburg was retired in order in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.) was 2-2, and Petersen was 2-3. Roby-Miklus recorded her 100th career stolen base.
In the finale, the Kohawks jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first, and added three in the third for the 8-0 lead. The Knights tallied two runs in the third and fourth innings to escape the run-rule. Coe used another five-run inning in the fifth to extend its margin to 13-4.
In the bottom of the fifth, Levine hit a two-run shot over the left center field fence to bring it to 13-6. The Orange and Black compiled another late rally in the seventh as Levine earned her fourth RBI of the game on her two-run double to left to make it 13-8. Levine crossed the plate for the final run as she scored on a wild pitch.
Levine was 3-3 with a career-high four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) was 3-3 with a run scored and freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
