WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (24-10 overall, 9-5 A-R-C) swept Nebraska Wesleyan (22-12, 7-7) Wednesday as it claimed both games of the twinbill 5-3.
The Knights' win echelon of 24 to date marks the most victories since 2009.
In the opener, the Orange and Black took the early 3-0 lead in their second inning, which included a two-run single by freshman Grace Petersen (Joliet, Ill.). The Prairie Wolves made it a one-run game in the fourth as they used a two-run double to center field. NWU tied it at three all in the sixth.
Wartburg answered on its next trip to the plate for two runs on RBI singles from sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) and senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny).
Classmate Hannah Onken (Jefferson) went 2-2 at the plate.
A similar storyline played out in the final game as the Knights once again took the 3-0 lead, this time in the third inning, which was highlighted by a two-run double to right by freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes).
The Prairie Wolves knotted the game at three all again in the sixth inning. The Orange and Black plated two in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from senior Madison Rentschler (Marion) which was later followed by an RBI double from classmate Morgan Goedken (Iowa City).
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Nebraska Wesleyan had consecutive singles to put runners on, but the next batter hit into a force out to end the threat.
Illg went 2-3 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) threw her seventh complete game of the year to earn her team-best 13th win in the circle.
Wartburg returns to competition Saturday when they host Loras in the annual Senior Day at 1 p.m.
