WAVERLY, Iowa-- In the first inning of the second game, senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) set the single record in stolen bases as she surpassed the 42 set by Alisa Steffen in 2001. The Knights were narrowly edged by Central 7-6 in the opener, but won the finale in run-rule fashion, 11-0 in five innings. This was the first run-rule victory over the Dutch since April 5, 2008 (12-0), also in Waverly.
In the first game, the Orange and Black trailed 7-1 heading into the fifth inning. Freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) hit a leadoff homer over the left field fence, to start the four-run frame. Pinch runner Haley Barkau (Denver) scored on sophomore Leah Campos' (Diamond, Ill.) single to right, freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point) scored on senior Madison Rentschler's (Marion) groundout and Campos scored on a fielding error, to make it 7-5.
Illg continued the rally in the sixth on another leadoff home run, to slice the margin to one. After a fielder's choice to get the lead runner, Wartburg had runners on first and third with two outs. The next batter unfortunately grounded out to end the threat.
Illg tied the single game school record with her two homers, and was 3-4 with three runs and two RBIs. She tied her career high in hits and runs.
In the finale, Roby-Miklus hit a leadoff single to left and then stole second to claim the top spot in the season record leader list. Illg picked up where she left off, as she drove in Roby-Miklus and senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) on her single to center to give the Knights the early 2-0 lead. Freshman Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.) slugged a two-run home run over the right field fence to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the next inning, sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) scored on Roby-Miklus' groundout to make it 5-0. In the third, Brecht drove in Illg on her double to left and she later scored on Rentschler's single to center to make it 7-0.
The Orange and Black used a four-run fourth inning which included a two-run single from freshman Ashley Quintana (Westminster, Colo.).
Brecht was 2-2, while Roby-Miklus, Illg, and Levine were all 2-3.
Sophomore Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) earned the win on her fourth complete game of the season.
Wartburg takes to the road for the next six games, and will first face Luther Saturday at 1 p.m.
