WAVERLY, Iowa - With four seconds remaining in the overtime period, sophomore
Kevin Duque pounced on a ball inside the box for the game-winner, leading Wartburg men's soccer to a come from behind 3-2 victory in the 2019 season opener over Westminster College (Mo.) Friday evening at Wartburg Soccer Field.
The visiting Blue Jays grabbed a two-goal lead 13 minutes into the contest and carried the 2-0 advantage into the half.
Freshman
Caleb Halleran led the charge for the Knights in the second half, tying the game up with his first two career goals. The native of Fairfax, Iowa, Halleran scored twice nearly three and a half minutes apart at the 47th and 51st minute to knot the score at 2-2.
Wartburg held a 12-2 shot and 6-0 corner kick advantage in the second half, riding its momentum into the overtime frame to eventually finish the game off in the final seconds of overtime.
"It was a great win for a young team," said head coach
Mike Madigan. "We found out a lot about where we're at, the good and the bad, and we get to move forward on a positive note."
Duque led the Orange and Black with seven shots, five on target.
Nicolas Hubacz added five shots on goal as well. Freshman goalkeeper
Brennon Woody of Grimes, Iowa earned his first collegiate win in net, making four saves in the process.
