WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg women's soccer team's five first-half goals and a hat trick performance by
Kate Luers led the Knights to a 6-2 victory over Augsburg University Thursday evening at Wartburg Soccer Field.
Five minutes into the match, the Knights gained a two-goal lead with goals from
Joy Smith and
Katie Berglund. Augsburg answered quickly with a penalty kick goal at the 9:37 minute mark to cut the deficit to one goal. However, the Orange and Black answered with three goals to gain a 5-1 advantage. Berglund's second goal of the game stood as the eventual game-winner.
Luers scored her first and second tallies at the 11 and 26 minute marks, while Augsburg scored late to set the score at 5-2 at the end of the first 45 minutes. Wartburg outshot Augsburg 13-9 in the first half, along with a 6-1 corner kick advantage.
Augsburg led 7-3 in shots throughout the final 45, but were unable to add any more goals. Luers completed her hat trick just under seven minutes into the second half. It was the first Wartburg hat trick since Alyssa Hewitt scored three against Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2017.
Sarah Campbell also notched a career-high three assists, becoming the first Knight to record a three-assist game since 2011.
Marissa Lopez improved to 3-0 in net, making four saves.
Emma Strong relieved Lopez in the second half and tallied one save.
The Knights, now 3-0 overall, have another home game on tap this Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. versus the College of Saint Benedict.
