Women's Soccer Stays Unbeaten with 4-1 win over CSB

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg women's soccer team advanced to an undefeated 4-0 record after a 4-1 victory over the College of Saint Benedict at Wartburg Soccer Field Saturday afternoon.

The 4-0-0 start for Wartburg is the best start to a season since 2004, in which the Knights started 8-0-0. Wartburg also opened the 2016, 2011, and 2009 season unbeaten throughout at least the first four games, but a draw was included.

Within the first seven minutes of the game, Kate Luers scored the first and sole tally for the first half, her sixth goal of the year.

Five minutes into the second half, Joy Smith scored her third of the season, assisted by Luers, to give the Knights a 2-0 lead with the eventual game-winner. As a result of a handball inside the box, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick at the 56th minute. Sarah Campbell converted, giving Wartburg a 3-0 lead with her first career goal.

Ten minutes later, Luers scored her second goal of the game, fifth in the past two games and seventh overall, giving the Orange and Black a 4-0 advantage.

Mara Flaherty scored the lone goal for the Bennies at end of the 71 minute mark. While Saint Benedict outshot the Knights 5-4 in the first 45 minutes, the Knights held a 11-4 shot advantage in the second half.

Marissa Lopez moves to 4-0 in net and tallied two saves in the game.

The Knights will travel to Eau Claire, Wis. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 to face UW-Eau Claire.
