Men's Basketball Opens 2020 Hosting Dubuque

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg men's basketball team is set to begin the 2020 calendar year this Saturday, Jan. 4 at Levick Arena, hosting American Rivers Conference opponent University of Dubuque.

Matchup Notes
  • Last season the Knights won both matchups against the Spartans
  • Wartburg hosted Dubuque on Jan. 19 and had an 82-65 win 
  • Dubuque hosted the Orange and Black on Feb. 16 where the Knights took a 71-61 victory
  • The Knights hosted the Spartans in the American Rivers Conference Tournament, but fell 83-80 as Dubuque advanced 
Wartburg
  • The Knights snapped a seven-game losing skid during its Florida trip, defeated Concordia Wisconsin Dec. 21
  • Wartburg ranks fourth among conference opponents in team defense, averaging 76.3 points against
  • Max Smith Drahos leads the team with 12.8 points per game and ranks fifth in the conference with 3.6 assists per game
Dubuque
  • The Spartans opened the season with five-straight wins, reaching the 100-point mark three times
  • UD is off to a 1-1 start during league play, defeating Simpson and falling to Nebraska Wesleyan
  • Dubuque leads the league with 41 blocked shots
  • Senior forward Avery Butler leads the conference with 21 blocked shots
  • Junior guard Mitch Burger is the team leader with 16.9 points per game and ranks second in A-R-C assists per game with 4.3. 
Last Time Out
Wartburg went 1-1 at the Cruzin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dec. 21-22, defeating Concordia Wisconsin 83-73 led by a 22-point effort from Broden Coulter. In game two, the Knights totaled a season-high 50 rebounds despite the slim 57-56 loss against SUNY-New Paltz. Ryan Stulken averaged 12 points and 8.5 rebounds through two games and earned All-Tournament Team recognition.
