CLERMONT, Fla. - The Wartburg softball team officially opened its 2020 slate in Florida on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Trine University and a 10-1 win over Muskingum University.
Kaci Sherwood paced the Knights' offense with homers in both games while collecting six runs batted in.
Olivia Brecht and
Madison Stoaks also contributed four hits each.
In the pitcher's circle, freshman
Carly Salutric earned wins in both games, including the start in game two versus Muskingum, allowing just one run in five innings pitched.
Wartburg 5, Trine 4
Wartburg walked off as winners over Trine with a Brecht RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring
Sydney Illg.
Leading 4-2, the Knights conceded a pair on the top half of the seventh off a two-run homer. Salutric came in to relieve
Maddie Rog and closed out the inning, eventually earning the win thanks to Brecht's heroics in the bottom half.
Wartburg 10, Muskingum 1
Six Knights recorded multi-hit performances versus Muskingum, as the Orange & Black bats broke out for six runs in the final two innings, totaling 15 hits as a team.
Salutric surrendered three hits during her first collegiate start in five innings.
Madison Hiestand pitched the final two scoreless frames.
The Knights, 2-0 overall, return to action with two games tomorrow. Wartburg faces the College of Saint Benedict at 2:45 p.m. and Chatham University at 5 p.m., both times eastern.
