Wartburg battled back in the second half against Buena Vista behind a 42.9% clip from long range and 57.1% shooting from the field after falling behind by 13 at the break. With just 15 seconds remaining, junior guard
Keagan John drove to the basket and laid in a bucket to cut the deficit to one. However, guards Garrett Sittner and Michael Demers from Buena Vista converted on some clutch free throws to close out the game as the Knights fell 78-82.
Junior guard John led all scorers with a career-high 23 points off the bench on 10-of-14 shooting. In addition to John's career high, senior forward
Ryan Stulken reached double figures in scoring with 10 on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with his team-high six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jack Molstead led the Knights in the assist column with a season-high five helpers. Wartburg finished the contest 48.4% from the field, 42.9% from 3-point land, 61.5% from the charity stripe and logged a season-high 78 points.
Defensively, the Knights forced 13 turnovers on five steals and two blocks. Wartburg held the Beavers to a shooting percentage of 47.5% from the field, 30.3% from long range and 61.5% from the free-throw line.Â
Cornell College
The Rams of Cornell will begin their 2020-21 season against the Knights after they finished 14-12 overall and 9-9 in the Midwest Conference a year ago. The Rams averaged 76.8 points per game last season and held a -2.1 scoring margin. Cornell also possessed a shooting percentage of 46.4% from the field, 33.7% from long range and 71.1% from the charity stripe.Â
Junior guard Jordan Magnani returns for the Rams after averaging 14 points per game last season, which ranked second best on the team. Junior forward Marcus Quirk also returns for the Rams after averaging double figures in scoring during his sophomore campaign. Cornell's biggest loss during the offseason was senior forward Cooper Kabela who led the squad in points per game (18.3) and rebounds (6.2).Â
Defensively, Cornell held its opponents to 78.8 points per game and forced an average of 10.1 turnovers per contest on 4.1 steals and 2.8 blocks.Â
