WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer won a lopsided conference battle 5-0 over Coe College on Saturday, Oct. 2 behind a balanced offensive attack from the Knights. Wartburg is now 3-4-2 overall, and 1-1 in American Rivers Conference play.
Caleb Halleran got the scoring started for the Orange and Black with two first half goals. The first goal came in the 19
th minute off a beautiful assist from
Jack Palen. Halleran would score again in the 34
th minute, this time unassisted, to put the Knights up 2-0. The first half goals mark Halleran's second and third of the season.
Wartburg would tack another goal on to go up 3-0 at halftime. The final goal of the first half came from
Tanner Shields in the 41
st minute. The goal is Shields' first of the season and it came off an assist from Anzurni Kimba.
More of the same in the second half as
Edvin Rizvic wasted no time getting the Knights on the board in the second half with a goal in just the 47
th minute. This goal was assisted by
Payton Chapman who set Rizvic up for his first goal of the season.
One more goal was added to the Knights total in the 82nd minute after
Nadim Gomez beat the keeper to make the score a 5-0 game. This was Rizvic's first goal of the season and the third Wartburg athlete with their first goal in this match.
Wartburg dominated from start to finish offensively and defensively. The Orange & Black outshot Coe 35-2 with 20 shots to 0 on goal in the match as well as a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Patrick McMahon played 76 minutes in goal and didn't have a save opportunity in the shutout win for the Knights. Halleran led the offense with two goals and Palen paced the team with an assist and 8 shots tonight with five on goal.
Next Time Out
The Knights are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Hamline University at Salzwedel Field.
