Palen's Hat Trick Leads Knights to Homecoming Win

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer got Wartburg's homecoming week off to a great start with a 3-0 win over Hamline University Tuesday, Oct 5 behind a hat trick for Jack Palen.

The Knights are now 4-4-2 overall and 1-1 in American Rivers Conference play.

The only score of the first half came from a Palen penalty kick in the 27th minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. This is Palen's fifth penalty kick goal on the season.

The Orange & Black outshot the Pipers five to one in the first half and had the advantage in corner kicks four to one.

In the second half, Palen would add two more goals for the Knights to complete his first career hat trick. The first of his second half goals came off a nice pass from Caleb Halleran in the 59th minute to make it 2-0 Knights. The assist is Halleran's first of the season. The next goal came in the 80th minute off a free kick attempt that found the top left corner to make the game 3-0. Palen now has eight goals this season for Wartburg and six in his last four games.

The Wartburg defense kept the Pipers scoreless and only allowed two shots on goal throughout the match. Patrick McMahon got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes for the Knights while recording 2 saves. This marks back-to-back shutout wins for McMahon in goal.
