WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer got Wartburg's homecoming week off to a great start with a 3-0 win over Hamline University Tuesday, Oct 5 behind a hat trick for
Jack Palen.
The Knights are now 4-4-2 overall and 1-1 in American Rivers Conference play.
The only score of the first half came from a Palen penalty kick in the 27
th minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. This is Palen's fifth penalty kick goal on the season.
The Orange & Black outshot the Pipers five to one in the first half and had the advantage in corner kicks four to one.
In the second half, Palen would add two more goals for the Knights to complete his first career hat trick. The first of his second half goals came off a nice pass from
Caleb Halleran in the 59
th minute to make it 2-0 Knights. The assist is Halleran's first of the season. The next goal came in the 80
th minute off a free kick attempt that found the top left corner to make the game 3-0. Palen now has eight goals this season for Wartburg and six in his last four games.
The Wartburg defense kept the Pipers scoreless and only allowed two shots on goal throughout the match.
Patrick McMahon got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes for the Knights while recording 2 saves. This marks back-to-back shutout wins for McMahon in goal.
Next Time Out
The Knights will resume the 2021 campaign on the road Saturday, Oct. 9 for a A-R-C match with Simpson College with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
