WAVERLY, Iowa – No. 16 Wartburg women's soccer were defeated at home 2-1 by No. 9 Loras College on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in a nationally ranked American Rivers Conference matchup.
The Knights struck first when
Katie Berglund beat the keeper in the fourth minute to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The goal marked Berglund's fourth of the season.
The Duhawks would answer in the 19
th minute, when Abby Eriksen netted the equalizer off an unassisted shot.
After and back and forth finish to the half, the score remained 1-1.
The second half saw a lot of scoring opportunities for both teams, but neither team converted until the 81
st minute when Brynn Jacobi scored off assists from Ryleigh O'Brian and Payton McDonnell to make the match 2-1.
The Knights finished strong in the last nine minutes of play, but Berglund's late shot on goal was saved by the Duhawks.
Loras outshot the Knights 17-9 in total shots and 10-5 in shots on goal throughout the match. The Duhawks also held a slight advantage in corner kicks five to four.
Berglund and
Joy Smith paced the offense for the Knights with two shots on goal each.
Marissa Lopez played all 90 minutes in goal for the Orange & Black and recorded eight saves.
The loss brings Wartburg's record to 12-2-1 overall and 5-1 in A-R-C play.
Next Time Out
The Knights are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 23 on the road in Lincoln, Neb. to face Nebraska Wesleyan University at 12 p.m.
