Men's Soccer Closes Regular Season With 1-1 Draw

DECORAH, Iowa –Wartburg men's soccer tied with Luther College 1-1 after two overtimes on Tuesday, Oct. 26 to close the 2021 regular season with a record of 7-6-3 overall and 5-3-1 in American Rivers Conference play.
 
The first half was a defensive battle that saw zero goals. Both Wartburg and Luther recorded four shots in the first half with one on goal each. The Knights had a slight edge in corner kicks two to one but were unable to convert on any scoring attempts.
 
The Orange & Black came out aggressive offensively in the second half and outshot the Norse early.

Jack Palen got the Knights on the board in the 59th minute, when he fired a goal past the keeper coming off a Payton Chapman assist. The goal is Palen's A-R-C leading 15th on the season and Chapman's third assist this year.
 
The Norse would answer in the 68th minute with a Ben Bolte goal to make the score 1-1. The Knights played the last 12 minutes with a one-man advantage, but the Norse were able to hold on to force overtime. 

Neither team was able to break the tie in overtime and the match would end in a draw. 

Wartburg had an advantage in both shots (21-18) and shots on goal (12-5), but were unable to convert on late scoring opportunities. Palen led the Knights offensively with the only goal for the Knights as well as six of the team's 12 shots on goal.

In goal for the Knights, Patrick McMahon played all 110 minutes in goal and recorded four saves. The Knights played strong defense all match only allowing five shots on goal. 

Next Time Out
The Knights will be in action next at the A-R-C tournament where they are the five seed. Wartburg will be on the road for a quarterfinal match against the four seed on Saturday, Oct. 30 with kickoff time to be determined.
