Last Time Out
The last time the Knights were in action was Saturday, Nov. 27 where No. 15 ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse defeated Wartburg 83-78.
Back-and-forth scoring led to a 25-24 Wartburg lead with under six minutes left in the first half, but Wartburg would pull away thanks to two
Cade Daugherty three pointers and another three from
Davis Roquet to make the score 38-28. The Knights would grow the lead to 13 points before halftime, but late free throws from the Eagles made the score 43-32 at halftime.
In the second half, it was more back-and-forth scoring throughout the first 8 minutes. The Knights would grow the lead to 17 points at its highest point, but the Eagles would continue to answer. With over eight minutes to play, UW-La Crosse cut the Wartburg lead to 10 points after back-to-back baskets.
Henry Noone hit on a four-point play for the Eagles to cut the lead down to four and then following a turnover hit another three to cut the lead down to one. While the shot was in the air, a foul away from the ball was called to give the Eagles one and one free throw attempts. Both free throws were made, making the score 67-66 UW-La Crosse.
The Knights would tie the game at 72-72, but the Eagles converted a late three-point play and then hit late free throws to hold off a late Wartburg run to win 83-78.
Season Leaders
Drew Olson is leading the Orange & Black in points per game, rebounds per game and steals per game. The senior guard is averaging 15.8 points per game and 5.3 assists per game from 60.7% shooting from the field and 58.3% from beyond the arc. Olson has grabbed a team-high 6.2 rebound per game and added an A-R-C leading average of 3.5 steals per game. The Osage, Iowa native recently set the school record for most steals in a game with eight against the University of Dubuque.
Jack Molstead is leading the Knights in assists this season with 6.5 per game along with 14.2 points per game. Molstead is shooting 46.2% from the field and 37.5% from three so far this season. The junior guard has also recorded 5.5 rebounds per game and has made the most three-pointers through the first six games.
Marshun Williams is shooting a team best 83.3% from the free throw line and has added the most scoring off the bench with 10.8 points per game. The Knights have five players averaging 10 points or higher so far this season, the three previously mentioned players, as well as
Keagan John and
Codey Hicks.
Luther
Luther College has started the 2021-22 season with a 1-5 overall record and 0-1 mark in A-R-C play. The last contest for the Norse was Saturday, Nov. 27 against Crown College at home, where Luther lost a close 75-70 game.
The Norse are led in scoring by Ben Gill, who is averaging 10.5 points per game off 57.8% shooting from the field and 11/18 from the free throw line. Gill also leads the team in rebounds with five per game and has added both three blocks and steals this season.
Luther has two players averaging 1.5 assists per game in Andrew Lazinbat and Eros Carpio. Lazinbat has added 5.5 points per game and four rebounds per game in six starts for the Norse. Carpio is averaging 6.3 points per game and is seven for nine from the free throw line.
Team Comparison
Luther is scoring an average of 57 points per game while giving up an average of 69 points per game. The Norse are allowing opponents to shoot 46.6% from the field while they are shooting 41.6%.
Wartburg is scoring 81.5 points per game on average while allowing 71.7 points per game. The Knights are shooting 52.5% from the field through six games and only allowing opponents to shoot 38.2%.
The Orange & Black are outrebounding the Norse so far this season by an average of 42.3 per game to 33.2 per game.
Series History
This will be the 140
th meeting between these schools dating back to 1947-48. Wartburg owns the all-time series lead with a 97-42 record and has won seven straight matchups. Last year the Knights defeated the Norse 69-47 at Luther.
