Men's Basketball to Open 2021-22 Season on the Road

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's basketball hits the road to open the 2021-22 season at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Wednesday, Nov. 8 with tip off set for 7 p.m.

Wartburg
The Knights finished the shortened 2020-21 season with a record of 4-7 overall and 2-4 in A-R-C play. The Orange & Black graduated two all-conference honorable mentions from the 2020-21 season in Max Smith Drahos and Ryan Stulken. Wartburg is tabbed seventh in the American Rivers Conference preseason poll voted on by the coaches.

The Orange & Black return some key players from last year's team, including Drew Olson and Keagan John. Olson averaged over eight points per game on 49.3% shooting from the field and added almost four rebounds per game, one an a half assists per game, and 12 steals last season. John averaged 8.1 PPG on 57.6% field goal shooting and 37.0% from three. The senior guard also added three rebounds per game, one and a half assists per game, and seven steals last season.

Cornell
Cornell opened its 2021-22 season on Friday, Nov. 5 with an 82-68 victory over Eureka College on the road and followed it with a home loss to Coe College 78-62. The Rams finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 3-6. 
 
Through two games the Rams are led offensively by Marcus Qurik and Cooper Kabela. Quirk is averaging 19.5 points per game so far this season, while Kabela is averging 12.5. Jordan Magnani is leading Cornell in assists with three per game.
 
On defense, Quirk is the leading rebounder with an average of nine and a half per game, as well as the leader in steals and blocks. The Rams' defense is allowing 73 points per game and out rebounding opponents by an average of seven rebounds per game. 

Series History
This will be the 44th meeting between Wartburg and Cornell College and the Knights lead the all time series 27-16. The Orange & Black have won five of the last six matchups, including last year's season opener. The longest win-streak in the series is seven straight wins from Wartburg dating from February 2003 to February 2006.
