MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Wartburg College softball team opened its 2021 season with a pair of shutouts during a nonconference doubleheader at Maryville College, defeating the Scots 11-0 and 10-0.
Wartburg's
Kaci Sherwood led the Knights' offense, contributing for a third of the team's run total on the day. Sherwood tallied seven runs batted in with three homers in five at bats.
Leah Campos and
Kaylie Springer also notched three hits each through two games.Â
The pitching staff of
Tarah Wehde,
Maddie Rog, and
Lauren Reicks combined for 16 strikeouts that helped lead to the pair of shutouts.
Wartburg 11, Maryville 0 (5 inn.)
During game one of the doubleheader, the Knights notched 11 hits with a trio of runs in the first and third innings before a breakout five-run fourth inning to end the game in five innings.
Rog earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing three innings and allowing just three hits with five strikeouts. Reicks then pitched the final two innings without surrendering a hit.
Sherwood, Springer, Campos,and
Jordan Swiatkowski each recorded multi-hit performances, with Sherwood and Swiatskowski leading the way with four RBI and one home run each.
Wartburg 10, Maryville 0 (6 inn.)
A solid start and a big sixth inning from the Knights' offense padded the lead for the Orange & Black in game two.
Sherwood's bat stayed hot, homering twice to give Wartburg a 3-0 lead. She hit a two-run home run to center in the first and added her third round-tripper of the day in the fourth inning over the left field fence.Â
Runs batted in from Wehde,
Olivia Brecht, and Springer were catalysts to the sixth-inning outpour that granted the Knights a 10-0 advantage.
Wehde pitched 4.2 innings to earn the win while recording nine strikeouts.Â

Wartburg's nonconference doubleheader at Piedmont College schedule for tomorrow, Feb. 26, has been canceled due to inclement weather.
The Knights will travel to Montgomery, Ala. next, with games against Huntingdon College and Mount St. Joseph University on both Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 28.
