Women's Soccer Pitches Shutout Against Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Wartburg women's soccer improved to 2-0 when it downed the University of Dubuque on Tuesday, March 30 behind Emily Fontana's lone goal of the match at Oyen Field. The Knights have won the past two contests against the Spartans and have dropped only one match in the past seven games.

The Orange & Black (2-0 A-R-C) will return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a contest against Coe College (0-2 A-R-C) at 5 p.m.

Wartburg controlled the run of play for most of the first half as it totaled 10 shots, including four on net. There was not much between the two sides in the opening period and the two teams went into halftime with the score knotted at 0-0.

Things continued to favor the Knights in the opening moments of the second half and Wartburg was finally able to break the tie in the 62nd minute. Junior Joy Smith carried the ball down the right wing and slotted a pass back to Fontana in the middle of the box and she placed her shot in the right corner to give the Knights a one-goal advantage.

The match began to open up a little more for the Orange & Black as they created a handful of chances after the opening tally. Wartburg was dangerous off corner kicks all night and Fontana nearly scored her second when her header rattled off the crossbar in the 65th minute. Dubuque started to gain some traction in the offensive third during the final 15 minutes but Wartburg was able to hold off the attack and win the match 1-0.

The Knights recorded 24 shots, including 12 on target while holding the Spartans to just five. With an assist in the contest, Smith now paces Wartburg with five points. Fontana's goal marked her first of the season and Smith and Kate Luers totaled a game-high five shots. Junior goaltender Marissa Lopez tallied her second straight shut out behind three saves. The Orange & Black also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
